We will be taking a group of 50 participants (20 from St. George 30 from St. Steven and St. Elizabeth Seton.) Spots are first come first serve, based on payment.
What will we be doing?
St. Stephen, St. Elizabeth Seton and St. George parishes are partnering with COAP (Christian Outreach to Appalachian People.) “COAP was conceived in 1977 as a grass roots inter-denominational relief effort in response to a devastating flood, which caused great destruction of homes in Harlan County. In 1980, a Mennonite volunteer, Marlin Yoder, helped to form Christian Family Housing Services to help actualize the dream of helping low-income families with their housing needs.”
The parishes will be driving 12 passenger vans to travel to Harlan, KY. We will be staying at a camp provided by COAP, CAMP SLEEPYHOLLOW. We will be responsible for cooking and cleaning up after ourselves.
Our group will also have sightseeing tours in the evenings, team-building activities, prayer and meditations, and travel around the local area. We will be working to improve life in a small area of theAppalachian Mountains by renovating homes, new construction, landscaping, and more. Students willreceive approximately 30 hours community service credit.
